KING KAMEHAMEHA DAY: SAMOAN PRIDE

SAMOAN TATTOO ANYONE?

Although the man in the photos below is from Waianae and not Samoan,
he has been adopted as a true Samoan brother.
He is wearing a carved whale bone pendant.

The Thai tattoos on his upper back date from from his marriage with a Thai woman.

  1. Glad to see you blogging again, Elsha! Those photos are splendid! But, getting those tattoos -- especially on the belly -- must have been super painful!

  2. Well, that's exactly the point, Gigi. Originally, only women got tattoos, but then the men decided they needed some proof for their own bravery, something that equaled the pain that women endure during childbirth. Whether or not tattoo fulfills that need is debatable in my opinion. Skin pain is different from moving your bones apart from the inside to let a baby through. But we'll let the boys think that, won't we?
